Melinda Clark adopted Gypsy Lu from a Humane Society in Illinois. Melinda was Assistant Manager of the shelter and Gypsy came in from the streets of Chicago. When Gypsy arrived at the shelter, she was emaciated and had her throat cut from ear to ear, most likely being used as pit bull fighting bait. Gypsy was about 6-7 months old, German Shepherd/Doberman mix.
Gypsy sat at the Humane Society for nearly 3 months. She rarely wanted to eat but her neck had healed and she was slowly getting healthier. No one had any interest in her and she was never asked to be seen by a potential adopter. She would paint her kennel in feces and would go to the back side (where she couldn't be viewed) during viewing hours. The staff refused to walk Gypsy because she would jump all over them biting their arms and grabbing clothes.
Melinda saw something special in Gypsy from day one. When sheíd go into her kennel to visit her, Gypsy would not jump or bite Melinda. Sheíd sit in her lap and suck up as much love as she could. So, being that Melinda was the only one who would walk Gypsy and spend time with the unruly girl, they developed a very strong bond.
One Friday morning, the Shelter Manager told Melinda that Gypsy Lu was going to be euthanized that coming Monday. She stated that no one had interest in Gypsy, she was out of control and would never housebreak. Heartbroken, Melinda turned to the Board President. Asking if she could take Gypsy home just for the weekend so she could run on 5 acres, have a last moment of happiness and life. The Board President agreed. On Sunday night, Melinda called the Board President at home and as soon as she answered the phone, the first thing she said was You're not bringing her back are you? Melinda replied with I can't
While the first several months weren't easy, Gypsy has lived with Melinda and the rest of her dog family for nearly 14 years now. Gypsy opened the door to dog training for Melinda. Being that she WAS so unruly, Melinda began training her right away in Basic obedience classes. Melinda and Gypsy Lu went on to earn a UKC CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) and a FDCH (Flyball Dog Champion) title.
In January, 2007, Gypsy Lu was dianosed with cancer. For the most part, she is well but has some bad days. Most importantly, she is still with us. Gypsy Lu now spends her golden years as the office dog at Melindaís workplace, Mad City Dog Training, in Madison Wisconsin. She greets everyone with a smile, literally, and a wagging tail. On August 1, 2007, Gypsy turned 14 years old.
It is with great sadness to say that Gypsy Lu crossed the Rainbow Bridge today, June 14, 2008. She was a fighter and was very strong, but her body just couldn't take anymore. Rest in Peace my sweet baby girl.
